The Journey to Matrix One
2021
Back in the spring of 2021, MetaMundo co-founders F9nn and Studholme brought together their entrepreneurial skills in building online marketplaces and platforms together with their expertise in 3D modeling, VR, product management, and blockchain technologies, just as the widespread adoption of the metaverse was beginning to rise.
Within this digital ecosystem, Studholme and F9nn saw a distinct lack of availability for interoperable cross-platform 3D models and, with their background in building platforms and marketplaces to support creators and brands, they conceived the world’s first 3D NFT marketplace, named MetaMundo.
Some of the most renowned investors in the Metaverse and Web3 spaces believed in and backed the project, including Animoca Brands, DCG, Sfermion, Sebastien Borget, MattyDCL, and Piers Kicks. In the first funding round alone, MetaMundo raised $2.7M to develop the marketplace.
2022
With the support of these major players, MetaMundo launched its own NFT, the Metaportal. This 3D virtual portal allowed users to travel seamlessly between unique, creator-built metaverse experiences hosted on metaverse platforms like Decentraland, Cryptovoxels, Sandbox, as well as a host of game worlds. Its run of 1500 NFTs sold out in a matter of hours.
This same year, MetaMundo was launched. The first-of-its-kind marketplace allowed anyone to own a digital asset on chain, whilst protecting creators through royalties, end-user license agreements, and copyright. Users could purchase high-quality 3D assets as NFTs, guaranteeing them both true ownership and never-before-seen versatility.
Each model was completely optimized and converted for use across an array of metaverse platforms and gaming engines, including Spatial, Decentraland, Somnium Space, Roblox, Unity, Unreal Engine, and many others.
With the successful launch of 3D scenes and assets, the marketplace soon expanded into 3D avatars. Each avatar was minted on chain on EVM as an interoperable .VRM file and was fully face rigged. Before purchase, users could test the avatar in MetaMundo’s custom-built 3D web viewer, once again pioneering market trends.
2023
The development of MetaMundo’s avatar marketplace continued as AI reached consumer markets. Combining 3D avatars with large language models allowed MetaMundo to begin development on its flagship product — a custom avatar maker, complete with emotes and exportable .VRM files.
While crypto entered the bear market, MetaMundo kept building behind the scenes, and in April 2023, Avatar.One was launched. The custom avatar builder also included ready-to-use templates for AI companions, making it the only fully 3D AI chatbot in the world.
2024
Avatar.One was an immediate success, soon reaching over 120k monthly active users. At the same time, over 100k Solana wallets were connected, with some users spending more than three hours at a time chatting with their AI characters.
The technology behind the project was the first of its kind and soon MetaMundo was receiving requests from stakeholders, parties, games, and other app builders for that tech to be released for use in their own applications.
In early 2024, MetaMundo rebranded to Matrix One — the decentralized protocol accelerating the development of human-like AI characters. Matrix One’s vision is to democratize the creation, ownership and utilization of AI-powered characters. Its ambition extends beyond merely enhancing digital interactions with AI agents; it aims to build a world where AI characters serve as companions, guides, and collaborators.
